Yes, you will see processed vegan hot dogs here on Create Mindfully. Some days I just crave a vegan hot dog.
Truthfully, I only buy them once or twice a year. To satisfy my craving I decided to create a Carrot Dog so that I am not eating all those processed ingredients.
This vegan dog has the same smoky flavor that the processed ones do. It also has a touch of sweet from maple syrup.
Using carrots is a good alternative to the processed vegan ones because they can be cut to the size of your hot dog buns. I only recently found some vegan gluten free hot dog buns. Before I did, I was using brown rice tortillas or bread. It just isn't the same eating a vegan dog on a tortilla. Happy dance!
Many people around the country (or possibly the world) are going to scoff at the way I eat my vegan dog. Yes, I use ketchup instead of mustard.
Don't get me wrong, I like mustard, just not on my vegan dog. I also love vegan mayo, onion and sweet pickle relish on my dog.
I have to say though, I googled hot dogs around the world, and saw that many people across the country and other parts of the world put ketchup on their dogs. You may want to google it yourself, if you're like me and are interested in other culture's cuisines.
There are some really interesting combinations out there! I'm not going to mention any in particular, because what I find out of the ordinary today may become my next favorite thing tomorrow.

Carrot Dog
Ingredients
- ¼ cup rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons low sodium gluten free tamari
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon liquid smoke
- ¼ teaspoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 4 carrots
- coconut oil cooking spray
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients except carrots and coconut oil spray.
- Peel carrots and chop off ends to the size of a hot dog bun. Boil carrots until fork tender, about 10-15 minutes.
- Put carrots in marinade and let sit several hours to overnight.
- Heat coconut oil spray in a pan. Add carrots with marinade and cook carrots until browned from sauce and tender, about 5-10 minutes.
- Serve in your favorite bun with all your favorite toppings.

Yes, the brand is Ener-G (spelled just like that). They are not only gluten free, but vegan as well.

Hummm, will have to try this. I am not a vegan, but both my husband and I are trying to begin a healthier eating style and we love carrots. We are also considering going gluten free (recently ordered a book) so trying this is not out of the realm. Thanks.
