Matcha Green Tea
Matcha green tea has been my latest craze. I love to make a matcha latte for breakfast in place of my morning cup of coffee. Another way that I enjoy it is in my morning smoothie.
If you have never had matcha green tea before, you should probably be forewarned that it is an acquired taste. It has a sweet and savory flavor. I personally think it tastes a little like seaweed. If you try it and don’t like it, including it in a smoothie or smoothie bowl is a good way to mask its flavor.
I tried it because I had heard so much about it. It has about ten times the amount of antioxidants as brewed green tea. It also contains L-theanine, which gives you a sense of calm and helps you to focus. Even though it contains caffeine, it doesn’t give you the jitters like some people experience from coffee.
Regular green tea makes me feel nauseous, especially on an empty stomach, whereas matcha green tea does not. They are grown differently, and matcha contains the whole leaf, so maybe that has something to do with it.
Easy and Healthy
Smoothies and smoothie bowls are about the easiest and healthiest breakfasts you can make. Throw all of your favorite fruit, greens, vegan yogurt, and plant-based milk in a blender with some protein powder, and you’re done. It literally takes less than 5 minutes to whip up.
They are a great place to sneak in some greens. My favorite is spinach for its mild flavor. Sometimes I’ll add kale in small quantities or a lot if is a mild kale.
For smoothie bowls I like to add fresh fruit and some crunch in the form of granola, coconut flakes or chips, chia seeds, cacao nibs, and nuts.
Smoothie bowls make you feel like you are eating dessert for breakfast, because they taste like sorbet. In fact, many times I eat them as a dessert.
