Roasted chickpeas are the perfect snack if you're looking for healthy snack options. They're a great alternative to potato chips.

They are crispy and crunchy; perfect for on top of salads or eaten by themselves.

Add them to a trail mix or cereal snack mix. They are a great option for an after-school snack.

The BBQ seasoning is out of this world good. I've also used it on BBQ Kale Chips.

Another chickpea recipe to try is my Chickpea Sandwich Spread. Other crunchy snacks to try are Sweet and Spicy Chipotle Roasted Chickpeas, Nacho Kale Chips, or Ranch Kale Chips.

Other flavorful snacks are my Cheesy Vegan Kale Chips and Vegan Pizza Popcorn.

    ❤️ Why You'll Love Them

    • They're sweet and spicy and a healthy snack.
    • It's an easy recipe made with simple ingredients you probably already have on hand.
    • They add a crispy texture to salads and trail mix.

    🧾 Ingredients

BBQ roasted chickpeas ingredients on a cutting board with labels.
    • Chickpeas (garbanzo beans): I used canned chickpeas that I rinsed and drained.
    • BBQ seasoning: Adds the BBQ flavor. I used my homemade BBQ seasoning recipe which contains chipotle powder, paprika, brown sugar, dry mustard powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, sea salt, and pepper. You could adjust it to your liking or use your favorite BBQ spice mix.
    • Olive oil: To distribute the BBQ seasoning and cook the chickpeas.

    🔪 Instructions

Chickpeas being dried on a clean towel and remaining skins being taken off.

Step 1: Drain garbanzo beans and dry them with a clean kitchen towel. Roll the towel over the garbanzo beans to remove as many of the chickpea skins as possible and dry them thoroughly.

Step 5: In a large bowl add roasted chickpeas and BBQ seasoning.

Roasted chickpeas in a large bowl with BBQ seasoning mixed in.

Step 6: Toss to combine. Let cool. They'll crisp up even more as they cool.

    🥡 Storage

If they are thoroughly dried with skins removed, roasted until crunchy, and stored in an airtight container at room temperature they will last longer than two weeks.

I had a batch of roasted chickpeas that lasted a little over a month. They might have lasted longer had I not finished them off.

    💭 Tips

    • You may be tempted to skip the drying process, but it helps because the skins hold a lot of water.
    • As always, taste as you go. You may want more or less spice of the BBQ seasoning. You can always add more, but you can't take it away. If you don't like your food too spicy, start with less and go from there.
    • It's important to add the seasoning after roasting the chickpeas because otherwise the seasoning burns on the chickpeas.

    Ingredients

    • 15 ounce can of garbanzo beans (chickpeas)
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 2 tablespoons BBQ seasoning

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 400°F.
    • Drain garbanzo beans and dry between two clean towels. Roll one of the towels over the garbanzo beans to remove as many of the skins as possible and dry them thoroughly.*
    • In a large bowl, toss garbanzo beans and olive oil. Spread out on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
    • Bake at 400°F for 35-40 minutes, or until crispy, tossing every 10 minutes.
    • Toss freshly baked garbanzo beans with BBQ seasoning. Let cool. They will crisp up as they rest.
    • Store in an airtight container for up to two weeks.*

    Notes

By removing as many of the skins as possible, they dry more easily, as the skins hold a lot of the water.
