My M.O. recently has been to have a cup of coffee, then a little while later a cup of chai tea.
That way I get a little less caffeine. Then I realized I could combine the two drinks into a Dirty Chai Latte.
The combination makes for a delicious drink. You can use your favorite coffee or espresso shot, with chai tea or black tea and chai spices.

❤️ Why You'll Love It
- It's the perfect cozy drink for winter.
- It doesn't have as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.
- It is simple and easy to make your own dirty chai latte and cheaper than from your local coffee shop.
What Is A Dirty Chai Latte?
A Dirty Chai Latte is a combination of chai tea and a latte. It has a shot of espresso and milk.
For this DIY Dirty Chai Latte recipe, I used cold brew coffee, chai tea, chai simple syrup, and soy milk.
How To Froth Soy Milk Without A Milk Frother
You can blend soy milk in a high speed blender or shake it in a mason jar. I prefer the mason jar because it's easy and there's less to wash.
Just pour your warm or hot soy milk into the jar. I use a plastic lid that just happens to fit mason jars, but you can use the lid that comes with the jar - you just may need to hold a towel over it if it isn't secure enough.
Then, shake vigorously. Pour soy milk over the drink, then spoon the foam on top.
🧾 Ingredients
- Chai tea: I used a chai tea bag. You could also use black tea and homemade chai spice mix, which has a blend of spices. You could also use store-bought chai tea concentrate which many grocery stores carry, or homemade chai concentrate. Another tea latte recipe is my London Fog Tea Latte.
- Water
- Coffee: I used cold brew coffee because it is less acidic than regular brewed black coffee. You could use a shot of espresso or regular coffee.
- Soy milk: I used soy milk because it froths nicely and that's what I usually have on hand. You could use oat milk, almond milk, cashew milk, or your favorite dairy-free milk.
- Chai simple syrup or maple syrup: I made this recipe with both. My Chai Simple Syrup with brown sugar adds extra chai flavor and sweetness.

🔪 Instructions
Step 1: In a saucepan, bring water to a boil. Turn off the heat and add a chai tea bag or black tea bag to the hot water. Steep 4-6 minutes. Discard the tea bag and pour the tea into a mug.
Step 2: Pour hot coffee into the mug with tea. If using chai spice mix, add it to the mug.
Step 3: Pour chai simple syrup or maple syrup into the mug and stir.
Step 4: Froth soy milk. If you don't have a handheld milk frother or immersion blender you can shake it in a mason jar with a secure lid with a towel over it.
Step 5: Pour frothed soy milk over the coffee-tea mixture. Spoon foam on top.
💭 Tips
- Do NOT use a Nutribullet to blend hot milk. It doesn't do well with hot liquids. If you want to use it, blend cold soy milk.
- I used soy milk because it froths nicely. You can use any plant-based milk you like.
- You can use espresso instead of coffee. I used cold brew coffee because that's what I normally drink. It's less acidic than regular coffee.
- Instead of chai simple syrup use maple syrup or your favorite sweetener. The chai simple syrup adds sweetness and a strong chai flavor.

**Important! If you are gluten free you may want to avoid coffee altogether. I personally have never had a problem drinking it, and I have a gluten intolerance. It is probably because I drink whole bean organic coffee, and grind it myself. I learned that it can be problematic for people who don't tolerate gluten. So I did some research and one article mentioned to try organic whole bean coffee because it isn't highly processed causing cross-reactivity issues. So please do the research yourself, and test it out. I try to only post recipes that are 100% gluten free since I have a gluten intolerance. I am really careful about avoiding gluten in my daily life.
