If you like spicy food, then you will love this easy Harissa Hummus. It is about the same heat level as sriracha sauce, with harissa being a little spicier.
That is to say at least for the harissa paste that I bought. I have yet to try other brands.
To give you an idea of the spice level of harissa paste, I used about twice the amount of sriracha sauce in my Sriracha Hummus as I did here.
Taste as you go to see how spicy you want it. I didn't use very much harissa paste in this flavorful hummus. You can always add extra harissa paste to make it even spicier.
Another spicy hummus recipe is my Chipotle Hummus recipe. Use the leftover harissa on a Spinach Tofu Scramble recipe. It also makes a great addition to a wrap.
Other delicious dips that go great with vegetables are my Tofu Nacho Cheese Sauce and Vegan Tzatziki recipe.

What Is Harissa Paste?
If you have never had harissa paste before, it is a spicy chili paste. It is made with roasted red peppers, hot chili peppers, and herbs and spices.
It is a staple in North African and Middle Eastern cuisine.
As soon as I tasted harissa paste, I knew that I wanted to use it in hummus. Hummus is an easy go-to staple in my house.
I already have around a dozen hummus recipes, with more on the way. It is one condiment that I will never get sick of.
It is super easy to make and can be used in a variety of ways. It literally takes minutes to whip up. It is a hostess' best friend when it comes to entertaining. Not only can it be made in minutes, but it can also be made ahead of time.
Hummus is the perfect spread for a sandwich or wrap. It adds protein and a wonderful creamy texture. It even makes a good dessert dip.
🧾 Ingredients

- Garbanzo beans (chickpeas): Adds the texture, flavor, and creaminess hummus is known for.
- Tahini: Also a traditional hummus ingredient. It's made from ground sesame seeds. Adds a nutty sesame flavor.
- Harissa paste: Adds a spicy flavor. I used store-bought harissa paste when I first made this hummus dip. You can also use harissa sauce, which I used in the photo above when I updated this post. I could not find harissa paste at my local grocery stores, but they did have harissa sauce. If you have a favorite harissa recipe, use that. Another recipe with harissa sauce is my Baked Harissa Tofu.
- Lemon juice: Fresh lemon juice adds a bright tart flavor.
- Garlic clove: Adds a pungent flavor.
- Water: To thin it out.
- Extra virgin olive oil: Adds creaminess.
- Salt: Enhances the other flavors. I like to use sea salt.

Hi Willow! I have Harissa Sauce in the fridge. Can I substitute the paste with sauce? Would the amount used be the same? This looks like a Super Bowl treat for sure!
Willow Moon says
I’ve haven’t tried this recipe with the sauce so I’m not sure. I do know it would add more liquid, so you definitely don’t want to add water. Also since it’s probably been loosened up with oil, you probably won’t want to add olive oil either. I’d start with a small amount of the sauce and go from there. I’d love to hear how it turns out!
